Buddy’s Guide to Dandelion Digging
A tale from the allotment with Buddy and Richie
At the far end of the allotment, where the soil is warm and crumbly, Buddy begins to sniff. He’s not after treats today—he’s on a mission: dandelion roots.
With a few practiced scrapes of his paws, he uncovers the top of a long, tap-rooted dandelion.
Richie, full of enthusiasm, jumps in and starts digging furiously nearby.
“First you find where the dandelion is, Richie,” says Buddy kindly. “Otherwise you’re just fluffing up the soil!”
Richie tilts his head. “But isn’t it just anywhere?”
Buddy laughs gently. “Our human was digging dandelions yesterday. That’s how I learned where to look. Sniff here—see the leaves?”
Richie sniffs, wags, and gives it another go. He does find one this time, and before Buddy can say much else, Richie’s already chewed half of it and dropped the rest at Buddy’s paws.
“That’s okay,” says Buddy. “You’re learning. But next time, maybe we dry them instead of snacking, okay?”
Buddy places the root and leaves in the basket their human left nearby. “One for the drying rack,” he says. “And we leave the rest for the bees and butterflies.”
Richie nods solemnly. Then digs in the right spot.
Buddy wagged his tail encouragingly. “Richie,” he said “do you know we are getting our own piece of the allotment with our own plants planted? Guess what, there will be carrots! And you now know how to dig them up really nicely.”
Richie looked at Buddy with his eyes wide and his mouth open. Then he did a big bark of excitement that made their human look over. Buddy laughed softly, he knew carrots were Richie’s favourite.
“We take a little, we leave a lot. That’s the forager’s way.” – Buddy
