Always Ask a Cat

A garden story from Buddy & Richie’s Field Guide to Plants (and Other Encounters)

One bright morning, Buddy and Richie were out for a walk when a little black-and-white cat came rushing up, miaowing loudly.

Their human bent down to say hello—and to everyone’s surprise, the cat came right up, brushing against her legs with a friendly purr.

Buddy and Richie stood gawping. Richie’s ears perked up. “Cats do that? They’re friendly?”

Buddy was about to reply when the moment passed, and they all carried on.

Later that day, back at home, Richie remembered the cat. He spotted Ricky—the big ginger tom who lived next door—dozing in the sun behind the garden fence.

Before Buddy could say a word, Richie trotted over and poked his head through the slats to say hello.

Ricky opened one eye. *Pat, pat!* Two soft but clear baps on the nose—fortunately with his claws still in.

Richie pulled back, startled.

Buddy walked over. “Richie,” he said gently, “it’s always best to ask before you say hello. Especially with cats.”

Richie nodded, rubbing his nose. “They’re not all the same, are they?”

“No,” said Buddy. “Just like plants. Some say yes. Some say no. And some—well—they just need a little space.”

“Everything has its way. Listen first.” – Buddy
